India has requested permission to investigate the Afanasy Nikitin Seamount (AN Seamount) in the Indian Ocean from the International Seabed Authority (ISBA). The 400 km long and 150 km wide AN Seamount is a copper, nickel, manganese, and cobalt-rich feature. Rising 1200 m above the ocean floor, it is located 3,000 km off the coast of India. Seamounts are hotspots for marine life and have the potential to be active resource extraction sites because they were formed by volcanic activity close to mid-ocean ridges.
