In Assam's Manas National Park, nine pygmy hogs that were reared in captivity were just released. The tiniest and rarest wild pig species in the world are pygmy hogs. They are different from other mammals in that they construct their own roofed nests. Their existence indicates the health of tall, wet grassland ecosystems, making them an indicator species. Undisturbed grasslands with young trees, herbs, and thick grass are ideal for them. The Manas Tiger Reserve is currently home to the viable wild population. The IUCN has classified pygmy hogs as severely endangered, and they are included in Schedule I of the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972. Assam is home to Manas National Park, which borders Bhutan's Royal Manas National Park.
