Researchers have observed brumation, a type of dormancy in reptiles, in a number of species during the winter months. Reptiles such as box turtles and snakes are able to withdraw to protected regions during this phase of reduced activity, which helps them preserve their limited resources and energy. Their metabolism drastically slows down, allowing them to go for weeks without eating. In order to survive in unfavorable environmental conditions and to reappear in more conducive climates for feeding and reproduction, reptiles must undergo burrowing.
