The antibiotic colistin is used to treat bacterial infections brought on by Gram negative bacteria that are more susceptible to the drug. It is typically used as a last resort when all other medications have failed. Additionally known as polymyxin E. Bacteria resistant to this medication have recently been discovered in the wastewaters of a US county by Los Angeles researchers.
