To improve maritime safety for fishermen, ISRO has created a Distress Alert Transmitter (DAT) of the second generation. Since 2010, more than 20,000 DATs have been put to use. Through satellite communication, fishermen can now send emergency messages and receive real-time acknowledgments. An upgraded version, the DAT-SG, makes use of cutting-edge features and capabilities. Fishermen are reassured of approaching assistance when messages decoded at the Indian Mission Control Center assist Maritime Rescue Coordination Centers in locating distressed boats for prompt search and rescue operations.
