In an attempt to become the first country to do so, China launched the Chang'e-6 probe to collect samples from the Moon's far side. Prior to now, only the USSR and the USA had sampled the near side of the moon. 2019 saw China's Chang'e 4 land on the far side, but it was unable to retrieve any samples. India's Chandrayaan-3 mission made history in 2023 when it made a close landing near the Moon's south pole. Despite its name, the 'dark side' of the moon receives sunlight.
