China has surpassed India as the country that imports the most Russian crude oil via sea, with 1.82 million barrels per day (bpd) imported in March 2024, as opposed to 1.36 million bpd, according to a report from energy cargo tracker Vortexa. This change is explained by the slowdown in Indian imports brought on by sanctions and growing costs. In the fiscal year 2021–2022, only 2% of India's total oil imports came from Russia prior to the conflict in Ukraine. But after the invasion, Russia surged to the top thanks to significant drops in oil prices.
