The National Dairy Research Institute in Karnal recently created India's first desi breed Gir calf to be cloned. It has a daily milk production capacity of over 15 liters. A female cloned calf was created by institute scientists using a somatic cell from a Gir cow, an indigenous breed. It is indigenous to Gujarat and well-known for its mild disposition, disease resistance, heat tolerance, and high milk production capabilities.
