In 2023–2024, Paradip Port Authority in Odisha overtook Deendayal Port Authority in Kandla as the leading major port in India for cargo handling. With 145.38 MMT of cargo handled, it represented a 7.4% increase over the prior year. It has the capacity to handle 289 MMT. It is particularly good at shipping along the coast, managing 59.19 million tons of coastal traffic and having the highest productivity of all the major ports. Under the Ministry of Ports, it was established in 1962 and grew to become India's eighth largest port in 1966.
