The TN Endangered Species Conservation Fund was established by the Tamil Nadu government to safeguard lesser-known species such as the Nilgiri Marten. This rare carnivore is found only in the Western Ghats of India, which include Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Karnataka. Its scientific name is Martes gwatkinsii. It is a canary yellow throat and chocolate-colored fur that makes it look like a mongoose or civet. It lives in Shola ecosystems. Its high-altitude (300–1200 m) habitat in particular Western Ghats clusters is the focus of conservation efforts.
