The first of four Survey Vessels (Large) in the Indian Navy's current fleet, INS Sandhayak, was put into service in Vizag. Its main function is hydrographic surveys for port approaches and navigational routes. It was built at GRSE, Kolkata. While gathering oceanographic data, the vessel surveys the continental shelf and the Exclusive Economic Zone. It can function as a hospital ship despite having limited defense capabilities. With two diesel engines, 110 meters in length, 3400 tons of displacement, and cutting-edge equipment, INS Sandhayak highlights native materials and multipurpose uses.
