In Chilika lagoon, researchers from Berhampur University in Odisha found a new species of marine amphipod, a crustacean that resembles shrimp. This brown crustacean, which is about eight mm long and has thirteen pairs of legs, belongs to the genus Parhyale, which contains fifteen species worldwide that live in brackish and marine waters. It is notable for standing out from the other fifteen species due to the presence of a strong, robust seta on the male gnathopod's propodus, or first pair of legs, which is used for feeding and catching prey.
