The mysteries of Mushk Budiji's distinct aroma—a native rice variety from the Kashmir Himalaya—have been revealed by a recent study. It was once in danger of going extinct because of poor yield and rice blast disease, but since 2007, SKUAST scientists have been working to bring it back slowly. Mushk Budiji received a Geographical Indication (GI) tag in August 2023. Because of its ability to flourish in a particular climate, this specialty crop has cemented its place in Kashmir's agricultural history.
