Between Tibet and the Indian states of Sikkim and West Bengal is the mountain pass known as Nathu La, which is part of the Dongkya Range of the Himalayas. The Nathu La region of East Sikkim had recently been hit by a huge avalanche. Following the avalanche, seven tourists lost their lives and twelve others were hurt.
