Recently, the Cabinet of Prime Minister Fumio Kishida approved Japan's Basic Plan on Ocean Policy. In light of China's increasing assertiveness in the surrounding seas, this five-year ocean policy aims to increase marine security. Every five years, the Basic Plan on Ocean Policy is updated. It was first created in 2008.
