A quasicrystal is a material whose atoms are arranged in an orderly fashion similar to that of a crystal, but whose atomic structure is more complex and does not repeat randomly in all directions. Its distinct intricate pattern sets it apart from other crystals. In the USA, a new kind of quasicrystal was found recently in the Sand Hills of north central Nebraska. It was symmetrical twelve times. It might have been produced by a lightning strike or a downed power line that resulted in an unintentional electrical discharge.
