The Houthi movement is a Shia Islamist political and military organization that was founded in Yemen's Saada Governorate in the 1990s. Its official name is Ansar Allah, which translates to "Supporters of God." The Houthis are members of a clan that hails from the northwest province of Saada in Yemen. They practice the Zaidi school of Shiite Islam. Their rise can be partially attributed to a backlash against the growing religious and financial power of Saudi Arabia. The Houthis invaded Saudi Arabia in November 2009 as part of their uprising against the central government of Yemen. The movement has its roots in Zayd? revivalism and was initially led by Hussein Badr al-Din al-Houthi, a politician and activist from Yemen who belongs to the Zayd? sect.
