After a contentious and racially charged referendum campaign, Australians decisively rejected plans to amend the 122-year-old constitution, granting greater rights to Indigenous citizens. A proposal to include Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders in the 1901 constitution was rejected by about 59% of voters. Only a national majority of voters and a majority of voters in at least four of the six states in the nation could approve the referendum.
