LignoSat, the first wooden satellite in history, is scheduled for launch by NASA and Japan's space agency, JAXA, in 2024. The satellite, called Hoonoki in Japanese, is composed of biodegradable magnolia wood with the goal of reducing space debris. Kyoto University scientists are developing the satellite. Wood samples from the initial tests, which were conducted in labs that replicate space, showed no evidence of damage, decomposition, or mass changes. The project seeks to improve the sustainability of spaceflight operations and open the door for a more sustainable orbital future.
