Within the Panama Canal, an artificial waterway that connects the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, scientists have recently found a lost forest that dates back 22 million years. The 80-kilometer canal has locks to change the water level so that ships can pass through the isthmus. France started the canal in 1881, and the United States took over in 1904, finishing it and running it until 1999. After the U.S. and Panama signed the Torrijos-Carter Treaties in 1977, Panama took complete control in 2000.
