During a brief stopover on Venus, the ESA and JAXA-led BepiColombo mission revealed unexpected details about atmospheric gas stripping. Its two spacecraft were launched in 2018 with the intention of studying Mercury's geology, composition, and magnetic field. The BepiColombo project, named for the Italian mathematician Giuseppe 'Bepi' Colombo, is slated to arrive on Mercury in 2025. It is the second mission to orbit Mercury, and its investigations are expected to be of an unprecedented complexity.
