The government's Rs 3 lakh crore smart meters project is jeopardized by Kerala's decision to use a different method for smart electricity meters. With the goal of improving distribution companies' billing and collection efficiency, smart meters track voltage levels and electricity usage. The goal of India's Smart Meter National Programme (SMNP) is to swap out 25 crore traditional meters for smart ones. The implementation is headed by Energy Efficiency Services Limited, a joint venture under the Ministry of Power.
