The frequency of extreme disaster events has significantly increased over the past 50 years, according to a report from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) titled "The Impact of Disaster on Agriculture and Food Security." Approximately 100 disaster events occurred worldwide annually in the 1970s. Nonetheless, during the past 20 years, the global disaster toll has increased to about 400 per year.
