The Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-Eight Amendment) Bill, 2023, was introduced by the Indian government and calls for 33% of the Lok Sabha's (India's lower house of parliament) and state Legislative Assemblies' seats to be reserved for women. Seats designated for Scheduled Castes (SCs) and Scheduled Tribes (STs) will also be subject to this reservation. In order to improve local self-governance and give local bodies more power in both rural and urban India, the Balwantrai Mehta Committee in 1957 and the Asoka Mehta Committee in 1977 both made recommendations that led to these changes.
