Recently, the Southern Naval Command (SNC) Chief of Staff was replaced by Rear Admiral Upal Kundu. He is an anti-submarine warfare (ASW) specialist who enlisted in the Indian Navy in 1991 after graduating from the Indian Naval Academy. He has commanded a number of naval vessels during his career, including the missile corvette INS Kuthar, the guided missile frigate INS Trikand, and the former INS Akshay. Additionally, he has led ashore units such as INS Tanaji and INS Kadamba. Graduating from the Defence Services Staff College (Wellington), Rear Admiral Kundu served as the Commodore at the Bureau of Sailors. According to a Navy release, after being promoted to flag rank, he became Chief Staff Officer (Training) at the SNC headquarters before becoming Chief of Staff.
