A recent study has revealed that the starfish's body plan is far more dispersed and complex than previously believed, which puts their evolutionary theory to the test. The study produced a 3D atlas of gene expression in starfish using genetic and molecular techniques. It showed that the "head" of a starfish is dispersed throughout its body, which begs the question of how these organisms evolved.
