Recently, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann declared that the state would forbid the cultivation of the PUSA-44 paddy variety beginning the following year due to its high water use and production of stubble. In the past, this variety was grown on between 70 and 80 percent of the state's total paddy cultivation area, and the farmers were very happy with its impressive yield.
