At a recent cabinet meeting in Guwahati, the Assam government declared that the Assam Muslim Marriage and Divorce Registration Act, 1935, was no longer in effect. The Act will no longer be in effect; 94 Muslim registrars used it to register marriages and divorces. The decision was made public by Assam Tourism Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah, who said that Muslim marriage and divorce registrations will no longer be processed under this Act. The government will provide the impacted Muslim marriage registrars with a one-time payment of two lakh rupees in order to aid in their rehabilitation.
