Tamil Nadu has emerged as the leader in the illicit trade of shark body parts in India, accounting for nearly 65% of seizures between 2010 and 2022, according to a 2024 analysis by TRAFFIC and WWF-India. According to the study, 16,000 kg, or nearly 80% of the total, of shark fins were seized during this time. The products that were seized are destined for mainland China, Singapore, Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, and Sri Lanka.
