The police massacred Adivasis in the town of Kharsawan, in modern-day Jharkhand, on January 1, 1948. This occurred during a demonstration opposing the union of the princely state of Kharsawan with the state of Odisha. Thousands of locals and protestors had gathered to listen to Jai Prakash Singh Munda's speech. Hundreds were killed when police opened fire on the unruly crowd because he was unable to reach the location. Many compare the massacre to the Jallianwala Bagh tragedy. There is still disagreement over the precise number of deaths; official estimates range from 35 to several thousand.
