In the Nuapada district of Odisha, at Sunabeda Wildlife Sanctuary, there was a recent clash between Maoists and security forces. The 600 sq km sanctuary was created in 1983 and is located next to the Sitanadi and Udanti sanctuaries in Chhattisgarh. It forms part of the catchment area of the Jonk River and has a variety of habitats, including plateaus, canyons, and waterfalls. Dry deciduous tropical forests support a variety of wildlife, including tigers, leopards, and Barasingha, as well as serving as a migratory route for endangered wild buffaloes that travel between Orissa and Chhattisgarh.
