The fossilized apex predator mosasaur found in Japan's Wakayama Prefecture has been given the name "Wakayama Soryu," or Blue Dragon. In 2006, researcher Akihiro Misaki found the nearly complete 72 million-year-old fossil. It was recently described in detail in a study published in the Journal of Systematic Paleontology. The discovery of this enormous marine creature, which possessed paddle-shaped flippers and a crocodile-like head, sheds new light on the ancient marine predators.
