Card-on-File Tokenization (CoFT), which was introduced by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in September 2021, went into effect on October 1, 2022. Tokenization refers to the substitution of an alternative code called the token for the actual card details. Currently, the only way to create a Card-on-File (CoF) token is through the website or application of the merchant. The RBI has recently suggested adding CoF token creation tools directly at the issuer bank level.
