India's first-ever report on the population assessment of snow leopards was released by Union Minister of Environment, Forests, and Climate Change, Shri Bhupender Yadav. The Wildlife Institute of India is in charge of the four-year scientific project, which estimates the number of snow leopards in the wild to be about 718. Ladakh has the highest score (477), followed by Himachal Pradesh (51), Arunachal Pradesh (36), Uttarakhand (124), Sikkim (21), and Jammu and Kashmir (nine). Ten to fifteen percent of the world's snow leopards are found in India.
