The Archaeological Survey of India-protected Martand Sun Temple, a revered Hindu temple close to Anantnag in the Kashmir Valley, was recently breached by members of a Hindutva group. It was constructed in the eighth century by King Lalitaditya Muktapida and combines Greek, Roman, Chinese, Gupta, and Kashmiri architectural styles. The stone temple, which is 32,000 square feet in size, has 84 smaller shrines, a 60-foot vimana with elaborate carvings, and an 86-column courtyard. In the fourteenth century, it is thought to have been destroyed by Sultan Sikandar Shah Miri.
