A Marburg virus epidemic in Rwanda has claimed six lives. Humans and primates can contract the uncommon but serious hemorrhagic fever known as Marburg Virus Disease (MVD). Like the Ebola virus, the Marburg virus, which belongs to the Filoviridae family, is the cause of MVD. The virus was initially discovered in 1967 in Marburg, Germany, and was connected to green monkeys that were affected. Direct contact with bodily fluids is the means of transmission, and the reservoir host is the African fruit bat.
