Recently, the plans for the 1,000 sq km Gelephu Special Administration Region (SAR), a megacity project close to the Indian border, were unveiled by King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck of Bhutan. The $4.5 billion project represents Bhutan's aspirations to use connectivity with India to promote trade and investments by turning the southern border town of Gelephu into an economic hub. Located at the intersection of South and Southeast Asia, the SAR would have its own legal framework and administrative structures to draw in outside capital. India is anticipated to be a major partner in the project due to its rail and road connectivity, so the King spoke with PM Modi about it during his most recent visit to India.
