Senegal's Lake Retba, sometimes referred to as Lac Rose or the Pink Lake, is situated north of the Cap Vert peninsula. Dunaliella salina, a halophilic green algae, lives in its waters, which are mostly drawn from the sea and are threatened by mining and pollution. The lake gets its characteristic pink color from the red pigments in the algae. The distinctive color of Pink Lake, a well-liked tourist destination, is caused by the alga's resistance to salt and is reinforced by carotenoid pigments that are high in vitamins and trace minerals.
