At the center of a dormant volcano in New Zealand, Lake Rotorua conceals a hidden hydrothermal system, as shown by new maps. Fluids, heat, and permeability are necessary for hydrothermal systems, which are prevalent near convergent plate boundaries and mid-ocean ridges. Oceanic crust is penetrated by seawater, which heats to 350–400°C and produces chemically altered hydrothermal fluid. It creates deposits resembling chimneys on the seafloor, where it sustains deep-sea chemosynthetic communities. This finding sheds light on the dynamic geological processes underpinning the lake and explains the complex inner workings of hydrothermal systems.
