Russia has formally withdrawn from a global security agreement that limits the use of conventional weapons, claiming that the expansion of NATO has rendered such cooperation unfeasible. In response to Russia pulling out of the agreement, NATO declared the official suspension of a major security treaty dating back to the Cold War. The Treaty of Conventional Armed Forces in Europe, which was intended to stop Cold War adversaries from amassing forces at or close to one another's borders, was signed by the majority of NATO's 31 allies. The signature date was November 1990.
