The South Caucasus landlocked mountainous region of Nagorno-Karabakh is contested by Armenia and Azerbaijan. The two nations, which were both formerly a part of the Soviet Union, have engaged in ongoing conflict for control of Nagorno-Karabakh for the past 35 years. The only land route connecting Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh has a checkpoint that Azerbaijan recently established at the beginning of the Lachin corridor.
