The 104th anniversary of the Perungamanallur massacre in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, was commemorated by political groups and leaders. 16 Piramalai Kallar community members were slain on April 3, 1920, as a protest against the harsh Criminal Tribes Act of 1911. The massacre represents the opposition to colonialism. The Act was used by the British for population control and fingerprinting. The Act was eventually repealed following Independence, but not before undergoing several amendments that contributed to a reduction in its harsh provisions.
