For the first time in 30 years, Burundi saw polio cases. Environmental monitoring of the area's wastewater revealed the presence of the Poliovirus type 2 in the area. Contact with an infected person or tainted food and water are the two main ways that polio is spread. Many do not experience serious illness, but some may later experience acute flaccid paralysis.
