Red colobus is important for maintaining tropical forests, according to a recent study. One of the two main simian groups worldwide, they are important indicators of biodiversity and are found throughout Africa. More than half of them are Endangered or Critically Endangered, facing extinction as a result of habitat loss and hunting. The IUCN-led Red Colobus Conservation Action Plan seeks to protect Africa's forests, stop unsustainable hunting, and give priority to the conservation of these animals.
