During the Global Fisheries Conference India 2023, the Gujarat state government declared the ghol species to be the state fish. The swim bladder of the ghol, also called the blackspotted croaker, is highly prized for use in cosmetics. It has been said to have medicinal qualities and is also regarded as a delicacy. Gujarat exports Rs 5,000 crore worth of fish annually, making up 17% of all fish exported from India.
