Kutch's native date variety, Kachchhi Kharek, wins Gujarat's second Geographical Indication (GI) designation. The palms, which date back 400–500 years in Kachchh, most likely came from seeds that immigrants from the Middle East threw into the sea upon their return from Haj. Kutch dates, renowned for their ability to withstand salinity, are harvested at the khalal stage and go on sale on June 15. Kutch is special because it is the only place on Earth where it is profitable to grow, sell, and eat fresh dates. With more than two million palms, it accounts for 85% of all date palm cultivation in India.
