In the Rajya Sabha, the Union Agriculture Minister disclosed that native chilli thrips in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh might have been displaced by the invasive pest Thrips Parvispinus. This polyphagous pest damages a variety of crops, such as mango, pigeon pea, and drumstick. Thrips parvispinus was first discovered in India in 2015 and has since spread throughout the world, resulting in viral infections and financial losses. Heavy rainfall exacerbates the pest infestation, which results in flower drop and lower fruit production. This poses a threat to horticultural crops in light of evolving agricultural practices and climatic conditions.
