The discovery of the hog deer, which had not been documented in the Rajaji Tiger Reserve before, is a noteworthy discovery. Generally solitary, it will sometimes gather in small groups when there is an abundance of food in open fields. Male hog deer are primarily sedentary and non-migratory, and they mark their territory with glandular secretions. The females of this species are slightly smaller and do not have antlers, exhibiting sexual dimorphism. Native to India, including the Himalayan foothill zone and Southeast Asia, hog deer have also been introduced to Sri Lanka, Australia, and the United States. Dense forests are their preferred habitat, though they can also be found in clearings, grasslands, and occasionally even wet grasslands; these variations are related to seasonal changes and the distribution of food. The International Union of Conservation (IUCN) has classified the hog deer as endangered, and Schedule I of the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972 lists it.
