Health officials in Chikkamagaluru are on high alert to prevent monkey fever, commonly known as Kyasanur Forest Disease (KFD). First discovered in 1957 in the Kyasanur Forest in Karnataka, KFD is a viral hemorrhagic illness spread by ticks. The Kyasanur Forest Disease Virus, a component of the tick-borne encephalitis complex, is the cause of the illness. Tick bites and contact with infected animals—particularly monkeys—are the only ways it spreads; human-to-human contact does not.
